The much anticipated Ashes 2023 just concluded on Monday, and boy, did it live up to the expectations as both Australia and England ended the hard-fought series with 2 wins each.
Australia, still fresh from their emphatic World Test Championship finals against India, started the Ashes strongly, winning the first 2 games and having one hand on the Ashes. But the hosts, England, came back strongly in the next 2 games.
They won the third game rather convincingly before outplaying the visitors in the fourth Test as well. It was only due to rain that Australia was able to escape with a draw, and with that, Australia was able to retain the Ashes and had the chance to win an overseas Ashes for the first time since 2001.
As expected, the fifth Test at The Oval proved to be a humdinger, with England trumping the Aussies in the end to one of the legends of the game, Stuart Broad.

Key insights from the above stats
Zak Crawley was the highest run-getter for England with 480 runs, and it came at an average of 53.33, which is quite outstanding given the fact that he was under pressure before coming into this series.
Likewise, his Australian counterpart, Usman Khawaja, ended up the leading run scorer for the visiting team with 506 runs and became the oldest to score over 500 runs in an Ashes series since Don Bran.
Only 7 batters scored a century in this Ashes series, and they were all by different batters. No batsmen scored more than one century.
Zak Crawley and Joe Root are the only batters who averaged over 50 among the batters who have scored over 400 runs in the 2023 Ashes. Mitchell Marsh also averaged 50 in the series, but he scored only 250 runs in the 3 Tests he played.
Australia star batter Steve Smith, who was unstoppable in the 2019 Ashes, could not replicate his success this time as he had a quiet time, making only 373 runs in 10 innings with one century.

Key insights from the above stats
Mitchell Starc ended the Ashes 2023 as the highest wicket-taker with a tally of 23 wickets at an average of just over 27. He showed his prowess and was possibly one of the few Aussie bowlers to negate England’s Bazball approach.
Stuart Broad, who retired from international cricket post the last Ashes Test, was at his best in the series and bowled his heart out throughout the series. He was England’s leading wicket-taker with 22 wickets and the only front-line pacer apart from Pat Cummins to play all 5 Tests for either team. He also went past the 600-wicket mark in the 2023 Ashes.
Chris Woakes, who didn’t play in the initial games, was instrumental in turning things around for England, taking 19 wickets in 3 games. 7 of those came in the incredible Oval Test, and this earned him the player of the match as well as the series award.
Pat Cummins, the Aussie skipper, and Josh Hazlewood, the new ball bowler for the visitors, took 18 and 16 wickets, respectively.
Quite surprisingly, the legendary James Anderson took only 5 wickets in the 4 games he took part in the Ashes, and his average was also poor, going for over 85 runs per wicket.
