“Three wickets in three consecutive deliveries” is the most wanted aspiration for the bowlers. When the bowlers can pull off hat-tricks in limited-over matches, they tend to decide the fate of the matches.

The celebrations from the bowlers after picking the hat-trick tell us the story of the struggles they went through. A hat-trick by a bowler will always amaze and amuse us. One requires extreme talent and plenty of luck to pull off the feat of a hat-trick.

A total of 23 hat-tricks have been graced in the IPL tournament so far. Let’s dig into some details about it.

#1 Lakshmipathy Balaji (CSK) vs KXIP (IPL 2008)

The CSKian Lakshmipati Balaji was the first bowler to pick up a hat-trick in the Indian Premier League. The Tamil Nadu-born fast bowler picked up his hat-trick against KXIP.

Balaji came to bowl the last over when KXIP required 25 runs. In that fine over, he was able to pick up a hat-trick, which contained the wickets of Irfan Pathan, Piyush Chawla, and VRV Singh. All three of the wickets were taken by means of a catch.

#2 Amit Mishra (DD) vs Deccan Chargers (IPL 2008)

Amit Mishra is one of the most successful bowlers in the IPL. He is the only bowler to pick up three hat-tricks in the IPL editions played so far. The 37-year-old wristy is the first spinner to claim 150 wickets in IPL history – the reason we top-ranked him among the best five leg-spinners in the league

Amit Mishra’s first hat-trick was ed in the league’s inaugural season for Delhi Daredevils. The hat-trick was in the final over of the Deccan Chargers’ innings when he cleaned up the tail by removing Ravi Teja, Pragyan Ojha, and RP Singh.

#3 Makhaya Ntini (CSK) vs KKR (IPL 2008)

Makhaya Ntini was the first overseas player to take a hat-trick in the IPL. It was in the game between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders.

Makhaya Ntini, the CSKian bowler, removed Sourav Ganguly with the last ball of the fifth over. However, he did not bowl again until the 17th. He got rid of Debabrata Das and David Hussey off the first two balls on that occasion.

#4 Yuvraj Singh (KXIP) vs RCB (IPL 2009)

Yuvraj Singh made a significant impact for KXIP through his two hat-tricks in 2009. Yuvraj got rid of RCB’s Robin Uthappa and Jacques Kallis on the final balls of the 12th over, and when he came to deliver the first ball of his next over, he picked Mark Boucher’s wicket to complete his maiden IPL hat-trick.

#5 Rohit Sharma (Deccan Chargers) vs MI (IPL 2009)

Rohit Sharma’s hat-trick in the 2009 edition was something unusual. Rohit was asked to bowl when Mumbai required 45 runs off 30 balls. He took the wickets of Abishek Nayar and Harbhajan Singh in the last two deliveries of the over. Later, when he bowled the first ball of his next over, he dismissed JP Duminy with the help of Adam Gilchrist’s fantastic catch.

#6 Yuvraj Singh (KXIP) vs Deccan Chargers (IPL 2009)

In a match against Deccan Chargers in 2009, Yuvraj managed to pick the wickets of Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Symonds, and Venugopal Rao, which in turn shattered the middle order of DC.

#7 Praveen Kumar (RCB) vs RR (IPL 2010)

Praveen Kumar was the only bowler to pick up a hat-trick in the third edition of the IPL. The first wicket was of Damien Martyn, who was clean bowled.

The second one was Sumit Narwal, who was caught at fine leg. Paras Dogra was the third victim of the hat-trick, bowled.

#8 Amit Mishra (Deccan Chargers) vs Kings XI Punjab (IPL 2011)

Mishra’s second hat-trick was when he represented Deccan Chargers in the 2011 edition. The Indian leg spinner dismissed Ryan McLaren, Mandeep Singh, and Ryan Harris of KXIP.

#9 Ajit Chandila (RR) vs Pune Warriors (IPL 2012)

Ajit Chandila was the first uncapped player to pick up a hat-trick. All three wickets were of the match-winning players of the Pune Warriors. By picking the wickets of Jesse Ryder, Sourav Ganguly, and Robin Uthappa in the first over, Ajit won the match for Rajasthan Royals.

#10 Sunil Narine (KKR) vs KXIP (IPL 2013)

Sunil Narine, the mystery spinner, claimed the first hat-trick of the 2013 edition of IPL. Narine managed to pick the wickets of David Hussey, Azhar Mahmood, and Gurkeerat Singh in his second over. Sunil bowled two off-spin deliveries to grab the first two wickets and a straighter one for the third wicket to claim his hat-trick.

#11 Amit Mishra (SRH) vs Pune Warriors (IPL 2013)

Mishra’s third hat-trick was against Pune Warriors. The champion bowler picked up the wickets of Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Rahul Sharma, and Ashok Dinda in the 19th over and wrapped up Pune Warriors’ innings to give SRH a special win, the fourth-lowest score successfully defended in IPL history. #12 Pravin Tambe (RR) vs KKR (IPL 2014)

Pravin Tambe, the leggie, was given to bowl when KKR needed 49 runs off 30 balls. The leggie with his variations grabbed the wickets of Manish Pandey, Yusuf Pathan, and Ryan ten Doeschate, who were the game changers for KKR in that edition. The leg spinner’s game-changing spell brought victory for Rajasthan Royals.

#13 Shane Watson (RR) vs SRH (IPL 2014)

Shane Watson claimed a hat-trick for Rajasthan Royals in the earlier season he played for the Jaipur-based franchise. The skipper of Rajasthan Royals picked up a stunning hat-trick, which included the wickets of Shikhar Dhawan, Moses Henriques, and Karn Sharma.

#14 Axar Patel (KXIP) vs Gujarat Lions (IPL 2016)

Axar Patel’s hat-trick against Gujarat Lions paved the way to win the match for KXIP in 2016. The left-arm spinner picked up Dinesh Karthik, Dwayne Bravo, and Ravindra Jadeja.

The left-arm spinner angled the ball towards the stumps to get the wickets of Dinesh and Bravo. Later, Jadeja was caught behind for a typical angling ball on the offside.

#15 Samuel Badree (RCB) vs MI (IPL 2017)

The West Indian bowler Samuel Badree was the first to pick a hat-trick in the tenth edition of IPL for RCB.

Parthiv Patel, Mitchell McClenaghan, and Rohit Sharma were the batsmen who got dismissed.

RCB couldn’t manage to win the match. However, Samuel Badree impressed his skipper, Virat Kohli, with the web he spun.

#16 Andrew Tye (Gujarat Lions) vs Rising Pune Supergiant (IPL 2017)

First time in IPL history, two hat-tricks were taken on the same day. In the first match of the day, it was of Samuel Badree. Andrew Tye took his hat-trick in the second match of the day.

It was the debut match of Andrew Tye in IPL, and he finished with the match-winning figures of 5/17, which also included a hat-trick in his first-ever IPL encounter. The three scalps of the hat trick include the Pune Super Giants wickets of Ankit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, and Shardul Thakur.

#17 Jaydev Unadkat (Rising Pune Supergiant) vs SRH (IPL 2017)

Jayadev Unadkat was one of the most successful bowlers in the IPL 2017 season. Unadkat came to bowl the last over of the match against SRH.

SRH required 13 runs in the previous over. Surprisingly, Unadkat didn’t spare even a single run, and in turn, he picked up a hat-trick, which included the wickets of Bipul Sharma, Rashid Khan, and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar.

#18 Sam Curran (KXIP) vs DC (IPL 2019)

In his debut season, Sam Curran bagged the first hat-trick of the Indian Premier League 2019 against Delhi Capitals.

The left-arm fast bowler of KXIP bagged his hat-trick in the last over and provided the victory for KXIP. He managed to dismiss Harshal Patel, Kagiso Rabada, and Sandeep Lamichhane.

#19 Shreyas Gopal (RR) vs RCB (IPL 2019)

Shreyas Gopal took the hat-trick that involved the major heads of modern cricket. Shreyas Gopal removed Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Marcus Stoinis to claim his maiden Indian Premier League hat-trick.

Virat Kohli, caught when he tried to hit over long-on, was the first one to get dismissed. Followed by ABD, who was caught in the covers. The hat-trick ball was spun to Marcus Stoinis, which urged Stoinis to swing the bat, and in turn, he got caught by Steve Smith in the mid-off.

#20 Harshal Patel (RCB) vs MI (IPL 2021)

The solo listing from the 2021 edition came from the RCB bowler and the season’s purple cap winner, Harshal Patel.

Patel’s hat-trick moment was part of his team’s 17th over when he removed the Mumbai Indians trio – Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, and Rahul Chahar. The wickets of Pandya and Pollard also confirmed the win for RCB, which makes this event more special.

#21 Yuzvendra Chahal (RR) vs KKR (IPL 2022)

Here comes a spectacle! The RR-bought Yuzvendra Chahal came to bowl his last over in the 17th over of the KKR innings when 40 runs were needed. KKR captain Shreyas Iyer played an excellent knock in the chase until this cracker of an over from Chahal.

The Indian leg-spinner picked up the wicket of Venkatesh Iyer on the very first ball of the over and gave two runs in the next two balls. On the fourth delivery, Shreyas Iyer’s mishit caught him in front of the stump while trying to work across the line.

With Shivam Mavi and Pat Cummins falling to Chahal’s leg-spinners in the next two balls, the Indian leg-spinner completed a five-wicket haul for which he earned a Man of the Match award in a nail-biting victory finish for RR. #22 Rashid Khan (GT) vs KKR (IPL 2023)

When everyone looked at a rare off-day for Rashid Khan in a T20 game, the Afghan spinner, wicketless in the first three overs, came up with his masterpiece in his final over. Picking up the season’s first hat-trick, Rashid got GT the much-needed breakthrough in the game for his team.

He dismissed dangerous Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, and the in-form Shardul Thakur on consecutive deliveries to claim his first hat-trick of the tournament. Unfortunately for the hat-trick bowler, KKR batter Rinku Singh displayed an unbelievable streak of five sixes in the final over to clinch victory for KKR.

#23 Yuzvendra Chahal (PBKS) vs CSK (IPL 2025)

Yuzvendra Chahal achieved a hat-trick playing for Punjab Kings against Chennai Super Kings at Chennai. This feat put Chahal in a special list of bowlers who have achieved more than one hat-trick in IPL history. He is the third addition to the list, which has Amit Mishra (3) and Yuvraj Singh (2). Chahal’s first hat-trick came against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2022.

This time, in 2025, Chahal’s victims include Deepak Hooda, Anshul Kamboj, and Noor Ahmad. Chahal now has nine four-plus wicket-hauls in the IPL, which is the most by any player.
