The Count of IPL Sixes – Season by Season

With cricket becoming more and more of a batsmen’s game, you cannot miss out on the increase in the number of sixes hit every year. The table below, which shows the rise in the number of sixes hit in every single IPL season, proves the same. IPL 2022 became the first-ever edition to see 1000+ sixes hit in a year.

The International Cricket Council, along with the cricketing boards around the globe, should find a way to bring balance between the bat and ball to make games more unpredictable, thereby interesting. However, it’s a topic for another day.

This article will discuss the number of sixes hit in every season of the Indian Premier League.

Stats Insights

As mentioned above, 2022 became the first season to see sixes count in 4 digits. Even though the increase in the number of teams in the 2022 season (and matches) could be the reason, IPL has been a 10-teams event before, and the count never went above 750 on those occasions.

One can also see the gradual increase in the last column, i.e., the sixes hit per match have increased over the last few years in the tournament.

Mumbai Indian is the the teams that conceded the most sixes in the overall tournament.

You can also find the bowlers list here to understand which bowlers have conceded the most maximums in tournament history.

Chris Gayle’s 17 sixes against Pune Warriors in 2013 is the highest number of sixes impacted by a batsman in a single IPL innings (check the top ten six-rich IPL innings to see how Gayle dominates the list). The blistering Gayle innings also helped RCB top the list of most sixes scored by a team in an IPL match – 21.
