Rohit Sharma – ODI Runs against All Teams

Rohit Sharma, the current Indian skipper, is regarded as one of the finest ODI batsmen in the modern game and can be placed on the list of all-time great openers in the 50-over format. The star batter has had an illustrious career in ODI cricket and will now be seen leading the Indian side in the ICC Cricket World Cup for the first time.

Rohit’s start to his ODI career was a challenging one. He didn’t have the best beginning to his international 50-over format, as despite having all the talents in the World, Rohit averaged only a mere 30.43 in his first 81 ODI innings, scoring just 1978 runs with only 2 centuries to his credit. Then the transformation in his ODI career happened when he was asked to take up the role of opener for the new-age Indian team.

This followed the departure of big Indian ODI names such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Gautam Gambhir from the ODI team. Rohit had a decent ICC Champions Trophy 2013, his first major tourney as an opener, scoring 177 runs in 5 games, but the results post that have been surreal from the bat of Rohit Sharma.

Year after, Rohit, as a captain, took the Indian side to a World Cup final in 2023, and as a batter, his hunt for the runs and sixes continues.

As the 6th-highest run-getter second-most century scorer, while opening the innings in ODI, Rohit has already been proved a modern-day ODI great.

Key insights from the above stats

978: Out of the total runs in his ODI career, 978 have come in the 2 World Cups he has played (2015 and 2019). This includes a stunning 6 centuries, out of which he made 5 in the 2019 World Cup, where he emerged as the leading run-scorer in the tournament. With a staggering average of 65.20 in the 17 innings, Rohit has a golden chance to make it even more prolific in the World Cup.

3: The number of teams against whom the star Indian batter has scored 1000 or more runs in his ODI career. These are Australia, the West Indies, and Sri Lanka, all of whom are former world champions.

8: The above number rises to 8 when we consider his career scores of 600 or more in ODI cricket. Apart from the 3 teams mentioned above, Rohit Sharma has scored 600 or more runs against England, New Zealand, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and South Africa.

2379: The number of runs that the Indian skipper has scored against Australia in ODI cricket. He is the second-highest scorer against Australia behind only Sachin Tendulkar (3077 runs in 70 innings). He has a chance to add even more, given that India and Australia are scheduled to play a considerable number of games in the coming months.

8: To make 2379 runs in just 45 innings, you need to score a lot of big scores, and that is what Rohit has achieved against Australia, most by any batter against any single opponent in the format. Virat Kohli’s 10 and 9 ODI tons versus Sri Lanka and the West Indies, respectively, and Sachin’s 9 against Australia make the top 3 on the list.

3: Rohit Sharma has scored 3 double centuries in his ODI career and is the only one in the history of cricket to make more than 1 ODI double century. While his maiden double ton came against Australia when he scored 209 in Bangalore way back in 2013, his 2 subsequent double centuries came against the Sri Lankan team in 2014 and 2017 at Kolkata and Mohali, respectively.

264: Rohit Sharma’s highest ODI score, and this is also the highest ever by a batter in the 50-over format at the international level. He made a sensational 264 against the former World Champions, Sri Lanka, at the iconic Eden Gardens in 2014, and interestingly, his third double ton of 208* was also against the same opponent.

2021: We will continue to have Sri Lanka in our discussion, both for good and bad reasons. We have already established the fact that Rohit’s 2 of the 3 ODI double tons have come against Sri Lanka, and he may be a very prolific scorer against his neighbours.

He has made 2021 runs in 53 innings at an average of 45.93, with 6 centuries to his name. This is his second-best performance against a team in his ODI career. At the same time, Rohit has also made 5 of his 16 ducks against Sri Lanka, which is by far his most against a single side in ODIs.

1613: The other team against which Rohit has scored 1000 runs or more is the West Indies. The men from the Caribbean have had to bear the brunt of the hitman throughout his ODI career, as he has amassed a whopping 1613 runs in just 35 innings It came at an average of 57.33 (his third-best against a side with a minimum of 500 runs), scoring 3 centuries in the process.

873: The number of ODI runs that Rohit has scored against arch-rivals Pakistan in his career. This has come in 19 innings, where he has averaged 51.35, scoring 2 centuries in the process. Interestingly, both of his tons have come one each in the 2018 Asia Cup and 2019 World Cup, respectively.

786: Rohit Sharma’s big-match capabilities can be seen when he faces the other neighbour, Bangladesh, in ODI cricket. Against them, he has made 786 at an average of 56.14, which includes 3 centuries in 17 innings. All 3 have come in 3 different ICC tournaments spanning 3 different years.

The first was in the quarterfinal game in the 2015 World Cup, where he made 137, while the next 2 came in Edgbaston, one in the 2017 Champions Trophy Semifinal (123*) and the other in the 2019 ICC World Cup league stage (104).

982: He has a great chance to go past 1000 runs in ODIs against the Kiwis, as he is just 28 short of the milestone. Rohit has been historically quiet against the 2019 World Cup runners-up, averaging just 37.76 and making only 2 centuries in 27 innings.

806: He has made the least number of runs against England in his format (a minimum of 10 ODI innings). The world-class batter has found things going tough when he faced the Proteas in the format, as he averages just over 33 in 25 innings. But at the same time, Rohit scored 3 tons against South Africa, one of which came in the 2019 World Cup.

846: Rohit has faced England 23 times, scoring 846 runs at an average of 47.00 with 3 centuries.
