The Indian Double Centurions on England Soil

Sunil Gavaskar has recorded the highest individual score for India in England in Tests. The Little Master scored 221 runs to almost take India home in the 1979 Oval Test.

Rahul Dravid is the other batter to go past 200 in England. In the 2002 Oval Test, he scored a match-saving 217-run knock.

Dravid has also sured the 100-run mark the most times. He brought up six tons in England’s backyard.

There have been close to 50 instances of Indian batters scoring Test hundreds in England. Only three of them have come by No. 8 or lower Indian batters, the most for a visiting team in England. Anil Kumble (110*), Kapil Dev (110), and Ajit Agarkar (109*) scored their centuries at No. 8.

The same match saw Dravid (148) and Sourav Ganguly (128) aggregate hundreds along with the Master Blaster. This is the only instance of three Indian batters scoring centuries in the same Test in England.

Mankad’s score in Lord’s is also the highest in a lost Test in England. The Englishmen handed an eight-wicket loss to India.
