Key Insights

Mohammad Nissar was the first Indian bowler to take a Test five-wicket haul in England. He returned with the figures of 5 for 93 in what was India’s first-ever Test match back in 1932.

Since then, 22 Indian bowlers have picked up at least one five-for in England, with 10 of them having two each.

14 of those bowlers have taken a five-for at the Lord’s, the most by Indians at a single venue in England. Two of those five-wicket hauls came in the 2014 Test, one each by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ishant Sharma. This is the only instance of two Indian bowlers taking five-wicket hauls in the same Test in England.

The 2014 Lord’s Test also recorded the best Test bowling figures by an Indian in England. Ishant racked up seven wickets for 74 runs to carve out a win for India.

Chetan Sharma has ed the best Test match haul in England. His 4 for 130 and 6 for 58 combined to give him the match haul of 10 for 188 at Birmingham in 1986. Check out here the world’s leading 10-wicket haul takers in Test cricket.

Lala Amarnath (Lord’s & Manchester, 1946), Surendra Nath (Manchester & The Oval, 1959), and Bhuvneshwar (Nottingham & Lord’s, 2014) are the three Indian bowlers with fifers in consecutive Test matches in England.

There’s one more thing common between Amarnath and Bhuvneshwar. Their respective five-fors came in their first two Test matches in England. Six other Indian bowlers have taken a five-wicket haul each in their first Test in England.
